Tutor Position Overview
West Chester University's Learning Assistance and Resource Center (LARC) houses the university's tutoring center, success coaching office, and writing center. The tutoring center employs roughly 130 tutors each semester and offers tutoring in more than 80 courses. The purpose of this role is to provide tutoring services to WCU students.
- Job Title: Tutor
- Location: West Chester University (WCU) - In Person and Remote
- Department: Learning Assistance & Resource Center (LARC)
- Pay: New Hire: $10; Upon completion of Level I Tutor training: $11
- Optional trainings – Level II Tutor: $12 and Level III Tutor: $13
- Peer Tutor Coordinator Position: $15 (Level III Training Required)
Responsibilities & Duties
- Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing topics and creating necessary tutoring materials.
- Facilitate tutoring sessions with students individually and/or in a group.
- Review class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
- Teach students study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
- Provide feedback to students, using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
- Participate in CRLA Level 1 training sessions.
- Organize tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
- Collaborate with students, Peer Tutor Coordinators, the Assistant Director, and professor to determine student needs, develop tutoring plans, or assess student progress.
- Update files in a timely and accurate manner.
- Attend student’s class, if needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Admitted or enrolled in a degree program at WCU
- Grade of A- or better in any course intended to tutor or completion of higher-level course
- Undergraduate - minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
- Graduate - minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA
- One professor reference, preferably in the subject intended to tutor
- Access to campus for in-person tutoring sessions using on-campus parking or other modes of transportation, or access to a computer, Wi-Fi, and camera for virtual sessions.
- Recommendation from one professor (preferably in content area)
